The 80-year-old grandfather of Derry paralympian Jason Smyth is set to represent the Western Trust area in the British Transplant Games.

The event takes place this weekend and Robert Smyth will compete in the bowling and over 70's 100 metres race.

Mr Smyth has had a kidney condition most of his life. When his both kidneys failed, his family were all tested to determine who was the best match to donate a kidney to Robert.

It was Robert’s daughter, Illona Nielson, who gave this extra special gift to her dad, enabling him to live longer and now represent the Western Trust at the Transplant Games.

By competing at the games Robert hopes to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation.
