Emergency services rushed to the scene of a road traffic accident near the border yesterday evening.

Gardai, fire brigade personnel and at least one ambulance were all seen heading towards the St. Johnston direction in east Donegal.

It emerged that the accident took place near Porthall, outside Lifford.

Garda cars, including one unmarked vehicle, were witnessed by motorists on the main Letterkenny to Lifford road shortly after 6.40pm. They all had sirens in use.

Fire support vehicles were also seen coming from Strabane and over Lifford bridge and into Donegal.

One fire tender was heading from Lifford in the Porthall direction at 6.45 pm while a second fire engine, from Strabane, dashed through Lifford at 7.00 pm. An Irish Coastguard Helicopter also was called to the scene.

Initial reports indicated that two people were pulled from the car after it entered a river in the area at Sully Bridge.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident. It is believed that a female passenger is in a serious condition.
