TWO men with almost 140 criminal convictions between them have been jailed for their part in the death of a young police office in Derry a year ago.
Phillippa Reynolds, 27 died after a stolen 4x4 ploughed into the unmarked police vehicle she was travelling in at Dale’s Corner on February 9, 2013.
Shane Frane, 26 and Conor Clarence, 24, were jailed this morning at Derry Crown Court for a number of offences arising out of the incident, including causing death by dangerous driving.
Frane was jailed for a period of 12 years, of which he must serve six in custody before being considered for release on licence.
His co-accused meanwhile was handed a sentence of three and a half years, half of which he will spend in prison.
Judge Philip Babbington told the court that he was recommending that Frane’s sentence would be ‘indeterminate’, meaning that he could spend the rest of his life in jail depending on the decision of the Northern Ireland Parole Board once he completes the six years.
The court was also told that after the crash, both men fled into Ebrington Square where they changed clothes before walking past the scene of the tragedy.
“You then acted like the cowards you are and made yourselves scarce in the aftermath of the incident,” Judge Babbington added.
