SDLP Cllr Sinead McLaughlin has praised the swift response of Derry City and Strabane District Council in addressing a drainage issue at Trench Road.
Ms McLaughlin said: “After witnessing run-off material and sludge on the Trench Road yesterday morning, I am pleased to confirm the drainage issue has now been resolved and we are currently working to secure a clean-up operation in the area.
“As a result of recent stormy weather, seepage from an uncovered drain overflowed onto the Trench Road near the entrance to St Brecan’s Park. The sand and run-off material from a nearby building site has also caused disruption in the area, obstructing access to pathways for parents and children on the school run.
“I have received assurances from the contractor that this issue has now been rectified and measures are in place to ensure it cannot happen again.
“The council must be commended for their rapid response; it is crucial that matters such as these are tackled without delay. Given the current weather conditions, I would urge the public to report any problems with drainage or flooding as soon as possible in order to minimise the risk of potential contamination or damage.”
