Foyle MLA welcomes introduction of baby loss certificates

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed the introduction of baby loss certificates.

He was speaking after the Deaths, Still-Births and Baby Loss Bill passed the final stage in the Assembly on Tuesday.

The MLA for Foyle said: “The introduction of baby loss certificates is a small, but very meaningful gesture that will mean so much to families who have endured the loss of their baby before 24 weeks of pregnancy. It will allow them to remember their loss in their own way.

“The first copy of this certificate will be free of charge and the Bill also makes provision for same-sex couples to apply for a stillbirth certificate, ensuring every family is treated with dignity.

“This moment belongs to everyone who shared their story and experience of unimaginable loss. This is an example of politicians from all parties working together to deliver something tangible. I want to pay tribute to every parent who reached out, to all who responded to the public consultation and to the incredible organisations pushing for this provision. This win is theirs.

“There is still more to do in terms of addressing gaps in treatment and support for those who experience baby loss and miscarriage. I'll continue working to have these addressed particularly through the incoming Bereavement Pathway.

I hope this certificate can bring some comfort for parents that your little one existed and was loved. This legislation ensures that no family will ever find themselves in the position of not having their loss recognised in future.”
