An appeal lodged by Tesco to build a massive new superstore at the Buncrana Road has been turned down.

The supermarket giant had lodged the appeal after it was refused planning permission by the Department of the Environment (DoE) in December 2012

The hearing was held at the Waterfoot Hotel in Derry and concluded on November 14, 2013 after the Planning Appeals Commission (PAC) heard evidence from Tesco and traders who were opposed to the proposed development, at lands close to the existing B&Q store (pictured above).

The DoE has now issued a notice stating that the refusal should be upheld.

Responding, a spokesperson for Tesco said they were 'disappointed'  at the ruling as the store would have brought hundreds of new jobs to the area.

The spokesperson added that Tesco would now be reviewing the decision and pledged to keep the surrounding community informed of their plans.
