A young girl knocked down on one of Derry's most dangerous roads has admitted she is lucky to be alive.

Carly Gillespie was hit by the vehicle as she was playing with her friends on a grass verge close to the Foyle Road last week.

The 13 year-old was knocked down in front of her young friends, who immediately raised the alarm.

Such was the force of the impact, Carly was hurled twenty feet away, and substantial damage was also caused to the car’s bonnet and windscreen.

The road was closed for a period of time while paramedics treated Carly at the scene.

The St Cecilia’s College pupil was released from hospital on Friday, and is now recovering at her Brandywell home.
