An 18 year-old man escaped injury after his vehicle left the road and crashed into a telegraph pole in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police attended the scene of a one vehicle road traffic collision on the Draperstown to Desertmartin Road shortly after 3am following reports that a vehicle was in a field.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested but has since been released on bail, pending enquires.

This incident comes less than a week after Environment Minister Mark H. Durkan called an urgent meeting, after five fatalities occurred within the first ten days of the New Year.

The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, was called after a senior police office said Northern Ireland was facing a road safety emergency.
