A talented young Derry girl has seen off more than 200 competitors from all over the world to win the chance to perform on New York’s Broadway.

'Give A Girl Her Chance’ contest, organised by the producers of the Broadway musical ‘Daddy Long Legs’.

Following the online voting in the “Give A Girl Her Chance” competition, asked entrants to upload a video of them performing, Una Morrison (pictured), a North West Regional College (NWRC) Performing Arts student will now perform ‘The Secret of Happiness’ following a performance of the show at the Davenport Theatre, off Broadway in New York.

Una said she was shocked to win and thanked all those who had voted for her in the contest organised by the producers of the Broadway musical “Daddy Long Legs.”

“I cannot believe I won! I’m so thankful to everyone who has voted for me and supported me, particularly my family, friends, local media and everyone at NWRC.

“My uncle who lives in America encouraged me to enter the competition but I never imagined I’d win it. I’m looking forward to travelling to America in the coming weeks and performing at the Davenport Theatre off Broadway, which has been a dream of mine since childhood.

‘I've always wanted to go to New York, and now being given the opportunity to perform there is overwhelming. I would also like to thank the Daddy Long Legs team for giving me this amazing opportunity!’

Anne McMaster, Performing Arts lecturer at NWRC said she was not surprised that Una had won.

She said: ‘As a performing arts student at the college Una is well versed in musical theatre. She recently won first place in the Musical Theatre category of the Performing Arts NI Competition after competing against students from further education colleges throughout Northern Ireland.”

‘Daddy Long Legs’ producer Ken Davenport said, "When Kate Shindle inspired me to start this contest, I never imagined that we would receive 204 video submissions from young women from almost every state in the country, and around the world.

“An overwhelming 53,749 votes were cast, and we are thrilled to announce the winner with the most votes is Una Morrison from Derry city, Ireland!"
