A 26 year-old Derry man who was in possession of ecstasy and amphetamines and assaulted police who attempted a drugs search has been given a five month suspended sentence.
Iain Canning, of Inch View, pleaded guilty before Derry Magistrates Court to two counts of assault on police and possession of the Class A drug, ecstasy and Class B amphetamines.
The offences took place on October 29 last year.
Eoghan Devlin, defence counsel, said that Canning's charges had changed radically and that he has 'made plans to get away from the influences that caused him to offend'.
He added that Canning's offending had 'come to an absolute end'.
The court heard that the injuries caused to police were from Canning resisting a search for drugs.
Police sustained minor injuries with cut fingers and a sore chest.
District Judge Barney McElholm said: "Given the fact this was simple possession of drugs and given the assaults on police did not involve any serious degree of violence I will impose a sentence of five months imprisonment suspended for three years."
A destruction order for the drugs was also made.
