It's FIVE in a row for Derry City as they comfortably see off struggling Sligo Rovers
07 Apr 2018 9:45 PM
Sligo Rovers 0Derry City 2 Rory Patterson and Ronan Hale were the goal scorers as Derry City picked up their first league win at the Showgrounds since 2009. It is now five successive wins for the Candy Stripes in all competitions as City cruised to a deserved victory. Derry should have been on the score sheet on 15 minutes when Rory Patterson hooked a clever pass through to send Ronan Curtis through on goal but his shot was saved by Michael Schlingermann. The danger had not gone however, as the rebound spilled to the edge of the area where Aaron McEneff latched onto it, only to be sent crashing to the ground, winning his team a free kick dead centre of the goal. Rory Patterson took charge from the free and he went for power, and it worked to his advantage as his effort took a wicked deflection, with Schlingermann diving one way but the ball another, nestling in the net to give Derry a fortunate but deserved lead. The second half passed by without incident until City grabbed the vital second goal on 73 minutes. Both Hale brothers were involved as Rory fed Ronan on the corner of the Sligo area, and after getting a yard on his man, he drilled a shot across goal, beyond Schlingermann and into the bottom corner for his sixth goal of the season. Sligo Rovers: Michael Schlingermann, Gary Boylan, Kyle Callan-McFadden (Seamus Sharkey 56’), Rhys McCabe, Adam Morgan (Raffaele Cretaro 56’), Greg Moorhouse, Ally Roy (David Cawley 56’), Patrick McClean, Caolan McAleer, Calum Waters. Derry City: Gerard Doherty, Conor McDermott, Gavin Peers, Eoin Toal, Jack Doyle, Aaron McEneff, Nicky Low, Ronan Curtis (David Hopkirk 81’), Ronan Hale (Jamie McDonagh 74’), Rory Hale, Rory Patterson (John Cofie 86’). Referee: Paul McLaughlin.
