The Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum are inviting local primary schools to take part in the 2026 Caina Healey Children’s Try-a-Tri, which will take place on Friday, April 24 at Templemore Sports Complex.
The event is open to children in P6 and P7, giving them the chance to take on a fun and supportive triathlon challenge including a swim, cycle and run.
Organised in partnership with Apex Housing, the Try-a-Tri continues to grow each year, with over 100 children from 14 schools taking part in 2025, the biggest one yet.
The event is held in memory of Caina Healey, a Derry teacher and athlete, and reflects her love of sport and her encouragement of young people to lead active, healthy lives.
In the lead-up to the event, Danny Quigley and Bogside & Brandywell Health Forum physical activity instructors will visit participating schools, delivering training sessions to help children prepare.
Ciara McElhinney from the Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum said: “We’re really looking forward to building on the success of last year and welcoming even more schools to take part.
“The Try-a-Tri is all about giving children the opportunity to try something new in a supportive environment. It’s not about competition - it’s about taking part, building confidence, and enjoying being active.
“The school visits are a big part of that. They help the children feel prepared and excited for the day, and you can really see their confidence grow over the weeks.
“We’d encourage any school with P6 or P7 pupils to get involved - it’s a brilliant experience for the children and something they’ll remember.
Warren Kerr, Good Relations Officer at Apex, added: “The Ciana Healey Children’s Try a Tri is a great opportunity to bring kids together from all over the city to engage in this sporting event.
"The event showcases Apex's commitment through the 'Housing for All' Shared Housing Programme to build united communities where everyone is valued and respected.”
Schools interested in taking part can request a registration pack by contacting Ciara@bbhealthforum.org.
