African athlete Freddy Sittuk has promised to return next year to make it a hat-trick of victories in Derry’s Walled City Marathon.
The Kenyan (pictured crossing the finishing line) was speaking shortly after smashing his own record he set winning last year’s event.
His time of 2 hours 22 minutes and 27 seconds was just under three minutes faster than the time he post last year.
Speaking to Derry Now after crossing the finish line in Guildhall Square he said he was delighted to secure back-to-back wins.
He said: “I am delighted to come back and win for a second time. It was very windy and a tough course but I will be back next year to try to make in three-in-row.”
His fellow countryman, Peter Somba, competing in his first marathon, came second in 2.25.26.
Local athlete, Greg Roberts, of City of Derry Spartans, came third in 2.25.38.
Spartan Gary Slevin was the second local runner home, posting a personal best time of 2.45.01.
Former Derry City captain, Eamon Doherty, was also among the top finishers with a time of 2.57.18.
The ladies’ race was won by Pauline Curley, of Tullamore Harriers, in a time of 2.47.29.
Kenyan Selinah Kangogo, winner of the recent Wilkies 5K, took second place in 3.01.29.
Collette McCourt, Belfast, was third in 3.12.58.
