A second Sinn Féin elected representative at Magherafelt District Council has retired in the space of three months, the County Derry Post can reveal.

After 12 years, Councillor Sean Kerr has decided that it is time to step down.

His decision comes less than three months after the resignation of party member, Deborah Ni Shadhail back in November.

Mr Kerr was elected to the Council after receiving 1,117 votes in the Local Government Election in 2001.

Speaking today, the Maghera man said that it has been an ‘honour’ to have served the people of the local area.

He said:  “It has been a privilege and an honour to serve the people of Magherafelt District. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and I have many good memories. However, unfortunately everything has its day. I have been thinking about stepping down for quite some time now and I decided it was the right time to go.

“While I will no longer be an elected representative, I will still remain as a member of the party, working for the party.”
