A section of the main Derry to Buncrana road will be closed for two days next month for repairs.

The work will be carried out on the Buncrana Road from the Skeoge Roundabout to the border at Bridgend.

The £395,000 road improvements scheme is set to begin next Monday.

The resurfacing scheme of a 1.14km stretch of the road is expected to be complete by June 10.

A Road Service spokesperson said that to minimise disruption most of the work will be undertaken between 7pm and 7am.

However, the spokesperson added that to help ensure the safety of road users and contractors it will be necessary to close the road on Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, from 8am to 11pm.

“Diversions will be well signposted. Traffic travelling towards Londonderry will be diverted from the Buncrana Road roundabout at Bridgend via R238 Buncrana Road, R239 Burnfoot to Muff Road in the Republic of Ireland and A1002 Culmore Road, A515 Madam’s Bank Road and A515 Skeoge Link Road in Northern Ireland.

“Traffic travelling towards Buncrana and Letterkenny will be diverted using a similar route. Temporary traffic control measures including ‘stop-go boards’ will also be in operation.

“Access will be maintained for residents and businesses."

Meanwhile, a section of the main A5 Derry to Strabane road is to close for two weeks next month to facilitate a £265,000 resurfacing scheme.

Road works are due to start on June 2 from the Victoria Road/Woodend Road junction for a distance of one kilometre going north along the A5 Victoria Road to approximately 200 metres north of the Woodend fly over.

The scheme is expected to be substantially completed on June 27.

The closure is planned from Monday, June 9, up to and including Sunday, 22 June.

Both northbound and southbound traffic will be diverted onto the B49 Woodend Road. Local access will be retained.
