Residents living in a Dungiven housing estate have expressed concern after Roads Service chiefs removed a street light that has been providing light in an alleyway behind their homes for the past 42 years.

Since the street light was removed in September, residents in Finvola Park have been forced to use torches to see their way into their homes.

Homeowner Johnny O’Kane said he raised the issue with a Road Service official back in November, two months after the light was removed, however he alleges that he was told “not to enter a place if it is dark.”

“Our coal man comes at 7pm and he can’t get up the steps without the light.  It means that the coal man has to come in our front door and go out the back.  It’s a joke.

“We are not going to get a bypass, no car park and now they are taking away the street lights.

“It feels like we are back in the sixties, out in the garden using a torch to see where we are going,” said Johnny.
