In response to the rainfalls and consequent flooding affecting Eglington and Drumahoe, 22 volunteers from the British Red Cross Emergency Response and Independent Living teams had by Sunday (27 August) assisted 539 people with practical and emotional support.
We continue to support 130 people a day in the affected area.
At Eglinton, the Red Cross has distributed bottled water, blankets and sleeping bags at the rest centre and in Drumahoe an additional centre was opened to distribute water and blankets.
Three Emergency Response Vehicles, two Land Rovers and a tractor loaned from a member of the public were also used.
As part of the multi-agency partnership, teams from the Red Cross are working with Western Health & Social Care Board and Derry & Strabane District Council to provide emotional and practical support to people affected by consequences of severe flooding.
Working with multi-agency partners, the council and WHSC, we are helping as part of the recovery stage to help people to rebuild their lives and their homes following these devastating events.
Emergency Response Volunteers from the Red Cross have been distributing hot food and collecting information for the local council. We have also been helping households with the clean-up and through a partnership with Tesco, bleach, blankets (to replace the ones used to stop water entry through doors) and pet food, have also been distributed.
The floods have also affected Inishowen in County Donegal. The British Red Cross are supportive of Daniel O’Donnell’s Flood Aid concerts to raise funds for the Irish Red Cross.
