Residents living in Leckagh estate in Magherafelt have branded proposed plans for an entrance feature into the estate as ‘cheap and nasty,’ the County Derry Post can reveal.

Back in November, representatives from the Leckagh and Beechland estates had put forward proposed designs of men holding guns for the gateway features.

The matter had been adjourned to allow a period of consultation with residents after councillors had expressed concern.

At a meeting of the council this week, members heard that out of 504 questionnaires distributed, the council had only received 77 back.

Two homeowners within Leckagh estate said that they were in support of the features, while 16 said they were against the plans.

Some residents from Leckagh said that the proposed designs were “cheap and nasty” and would be an “embarrassment to the estate.”

One resident even suggested, that “the council should spend the money by cleaning the estate and removing the red, white and blue paint from the kerbs.”

The council had also received eight questionnaires against an entrance feature at Beechland estate.

Councillors approved plans to build entrance features at Killowen and Glenburn estates, while the plans for features at Leckagh and Beechland were put on hold.
