Primary school children in Derry have raised £16,000 for the Foyle Hospice through a special dance event.
Seventy four children from schools throughout the city took part in the Strictly Kool Kidz event.
The primary six and seven pupils trained for months in preparation for the finale events at the Everglades Hotel where they danced in front of their proud families and friends.
Michelle McGinn, who organised the event for the Foyle Hospice, said she was very proud of the children’s achievement.
“The children trained for 13 weeks to learn the art of ballroom dancing,” she said.
“They were taught four dances, the Cha Cha Cha, Swing Jive, The Pride of Erin and the Cowboy Charleston by dance teachers Anthony, Patricia & Genevieve.
“The children were a joy to work with and we have had much fun and laughter over the weeks.
“It really has been great to see the children connect and build friendships with one another as well as learning the art of ballroom dancing. Hopefully they will keep on dancing.”
Michelle thanked everyone who had supported the Kool Kidz fundraiser.
“For so long I have wanted to run an event like this to promote dance & healthy wellbeing amongst 10-11 year olds whilst at the same time raising awareness of the work of Foyle Hospice amongst this age group,” she said.
“Through this event I have also incorporated cross community relations between local primary school children which has been fantastic.
“I want to say a big thank you to each of the 74 children who took part in this event in aid of Foyle Hospice.
“It has been a great pleasure to get to know them all individually over the last 13 weeks.
“The children’s dedication to the training sessions has been brilliant.
“Their behaviour and conduct has been amazing, their families and schools should be very proud of them.
“The monies they have raised for Foyle Hospice will enable us to provide care to our patients.
“Thank you kindly for all your hard work obtaining sponsorship.
“A massive thanks also, to the parents/guardians, the primary schools & sponsors of this event for all your support over the last few months.
“The children have raised £16,000 for Foyle Hospice and they should be very, very proud of this wonderful achievement. Thanks so much to everyone who made this event a brilliant success.”
