This is the scene of a bomb attack in Derry last night.

A device was fired at a police vehicle as it drove along Circular Drive in the Creggan area of the city shortly before 9pm last night.

The device damaged the rear door of the vehicle before landing in a nearby garden and exploding.

The explosion damaged a hedge in the garden.

A wire could be seen lying in the garden this morning, suggesting that the device may have been fired by remote control.

The scene has not been sealed off by police. Dissident republicans have been blamed for carrying out the attack.

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey condemned those behind the attack.

“It’s simply through luck, rather than design, that this attack didn’t take the lives of police officers or residents.

"It’s simply an outrageous attack on this community.

"The perpetrators have nothing to offer but pain and misery that the people of the city don’t want, need or deserve.

“I would call on anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious or who may have any information to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.”
