PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton has blamed dissident republicans for the murder of a 29-year-old woman in Creggan last night.
Journalist Lyra McKee, who was originally from Belfast but had moved to live in Derry, died after being hit by a bullet fired towards police in the midst of a riot at Fanad Drive in the Creggan estate.
At a press conference at Strand Road police station on Friday morning, Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said the killing is being treated as a “terrorist act” that had been carried out by violent dissident republicans.
“Our assessment at this time is that the New IRA are most likely to be the ones behind this and that forms our primary line of enquiry.”
