Police in Derry have issued a warning to be vigilant after a number of reports of fake bank notes being passed to local businesses.

They told people to check their notes and if in doubt double check with their bank.

Police also appealed to anyone with information to come forward.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Recently in the City Police have started to receive reports from local businesses about fake notes they have seized.

"We don’t want you losing your hard earned money, so be vigilant, check your notes and if in doubt check with your bank.

"If you know of any information about who has a few fake notes then let me know. I will happily swap their fake notes for an overnight stay in Strand Road. The more notes they have, the better the room they may receive.

"I cannot guarantee the upgrading of the room."
