A father and son have appeared at a Derry court following an alleged dispute with neighbours where police were forced to draw their weapons on a man armed with a machete.

Patrick Carlin, 52, and his son, Glen Carlin, 19, of Amelia Court, appeared before Derry Magistrates Court this morning charged in connection with the incident, which is said to have taken place on Saturday night (June 28).

A police officer told the court that a report was received at 11.15pm that Patrick Carlin was 'running around with no top on' in the Amelia Court area armed with a machete, and that he was 'covered in blood'.

A second report came in that he was also armed with a camogie bat.

When police arrived they saw there had been damage to a car and there was also glass on the ground.

Glen Carlin was seen to be at the door of a house in the area with something silver in his hands but police view was partially blocked by a vehicle.

Police instructed him to drop the item but he refused and they drew their weapons.

The court heard that officers then saw he had a folding chair in his hands.

The court was told that he then shouted to neighbours, 'If you mention anything about me or my Da, I'll f****** kill you'.

The court was told that his father Patrick then appeared with a long piece of wood like a brush shaft and police pointed their weapons at him.

Police were told that Patrick Carlin had discarded the machete by 'recklessly' throwing it over a fence into a back garden in the area.

Patrick Carlin was also said to have smashed up the vehicle, armed with the machete and had also threatened to kill a neighbour who was still inside the car.

Police opposed bail because of the seriousness of the weapons involved and added that both father and son had made threats to kill in police presence and, given the weapons involved, there was 'a real intention to kill'.

Glen Carlin was granted his own bail of £400 to reside at Knockdara and have no contact with the injured parties or any witnesses.

He must also be electronically tagged, not drink alcohol and observe a curfew from 10pm to 7pm and was also ordered not to enter Amelia Court.

Patrick Carlin was refused bail on the risk of re-offending and interference with witnesses.

He was remanded in custody.

Deputy District Judge John Meehan said the situation was 'far too inflammatory' given the seriousness of the weapons used and the damage to the car.

The matter will appear before the court again on July 24.
