AN 18-year-old Derry man has been convicted of a number of motoring offences after claiming he was ‘test driving’ a moped after being chased by police.
Patrick Harkin, of Ferndale Road in Derry, admitted a series of offences that occurred on April 11 including driving while disqualified and having no insurance.
The court heard that a police patrol saw Harkin on a moped driving along the pavement with no crash helmet and his face obscured by a scarf.
The officers gave chase after the moped and saw Harkin trying to get up a steep incline.
However, the vehicle failed to climb the incline and came back down, after which police identified the defendant.
Defence solicitor Maoliosa Barr said his client was test driving a bike that was for sale.
Harking was sentenced to 12 months’ probation, 60 hours community service, disqualified for two months and fined £75.
