The PSNI is investigating the dumping of a large amount of unwanted clothing at a recycling bank at a Derry supermarket.

The incident happened at the recycling bank which is located at the car park of Sainsbury’s supermarket on the Strand Road, where unwanted clothes can be donated to Oxfam.

The clothing was dumped outside the clothing recycling bank at the site sometime between Sunday evening and Monday morning of last week.

An overnight downpour resulted in the clothing being left sodden, which means they can no longer be recycled.

It is understood Sainsbury’s staff removed the clothes on Friday morning.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said the incident has been reported to the PSNI.

“We can confirm that a large quantity of clothes was dumped late at night at the recycling bank at our Strand Road store,” the spokesperson said.

“Unfortunately. the clothes can’t now be recycled due to weather damage and the incident has been reported to the PSNI.”

The spokesperson also urged people to avail of the recycling banks they have at their stores.

“We have 10 recycling banks at our stores across Northern Ireland to help our customers donate unwanted clothes to Oxfam,” the spokesperson said.
