Investigation into the way police managed allegations against former officer

An investigation has been launched into the way police in Northern Ireland managed allegations of inappropriate conduct made against a former police officer while he was still a serving PSNI member.

The Police Ombudsman said the new investigation is linked to an ongoing case, in which the former officer was arrested in December 2025 on suspicion of committing more than 10 non-recent offences between 2000 and 2009.

These include a suspected rape, other sexual offences, and misconduct in public office.

Police Ombudsman chief executive Hugh Hume said: “This investigation centres on how a number of allegations made against the police officer were handled at that time.

“These are sensitive issues and those who made allegations did so in difficult circumstances.

“My priority is to ensure that their voices remain at the centre of the investigation as it progresses.”
