Simple 30 second check which could help drivers avoid hefty fine

Irish motorists are being warned to make one quick driveway check before setting off this autumn or risk a hefty fine.
While autumn may be one of the most picturesque seasons, it can also bring real dangers for drivers due to fewer daylight hours, low sun glare and greasy roads.
One of the most common seasonal hazards for drivers is falling leaves, which can build up on windscreens and cause reduced visibility.
Car insurance comparison experts from CompareNI.com are warning drivers they could face penalties of up to €5000 if they fail to clear leaves and other debris from their vehicles.
Section 4 of the Rules of the Road states that the windscreen and windows should be kept clean and free of clutter to make sure drivers can see the road and other road users clearly.
Motorists caught driving without having a full view of the road could be hit with a €80 on-the-spot fine and two penalty points for driving without reasonable consideration.
If the obstruction leads to an accident, drivers could be prosecuted for careless driving under Section 52 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, which carries a court-imposed fine of up to €5000 and five penalty points.
Under Irish law, motoring offences such as careless driving must be disclosed for seven years after the date of conviction. Failing to disclose an unspent conviction to insurers could result in policies being invalidated and claims getting rejected.
As well as causing a potential obstruction for drivers, wet fallen leaves can also present a skid hazard on the roads – they also camouflage potholes and debris which could cause costly damage to the car. Drivers need to be wary of these seasonal hazards and take extra precautions.
Alongside clearing leaves from the windscreen and windows, drivers should also make sure to regularly check for leaf debris in the windscreen water squirters and under the bonnet, as it can cause blockages which may lead to costly repairs.
It’s especially important to remove wet leaves, as they can damage the vehicle’s paintwork if left for too long. This is because decomposing leaves release tannins and acids that stain paintwork and trap moisture against the surface, accelerating rust.**** Car insurance is unlikely to cover claims for damages if the vehicle is not properly maintained, so it’s important for drivers to clean and clear their cars on a regular basis.
Ian Wilson, car insurance expert and Managing Director at CompareNI.com said: “Autumn brings its own unique set of challenges for motorists and something as simple as falling leaves can quickly become a safety hazard if left unchecked.
“Leaves on a windscreen may not seem all that serious, but driving without a full, clear view of the road ahead can increase the likelihood of accidents as drivers may not be able to spot potential dangers early enough to react.
“Taking just 30 seconds before setting off to clear leaves from the windows, windscreen, number plate and other key areas of the vehicle can make a real difference to visibility and help prevent an avoidable accident.
“Driving with an obstructed view could see motorists slapped with a hefty fine and penalty points at the roadside. In more serious cases, drivers could even end up in front of a judge charged with careless driving.
“Insurers typically use convictions as a risk factor when calculating premiums, so drivers could end up paying higher prices for years to come. CompareNI data indicates that just one conviction can see premiums shoot up by an average of 36% compared to those with a clean driving record.
“Drivers should always be honest about their conviction history to make sure they are properly protected on the road. Failing to disclose a conviction could lead to the insurer refusing to pay out in the event of a claim.”
