A Derry street once described as a ‘mouth with a missing tooth’ has now finally been filled.
Planning permission was given last year for a new four storey apartment building on an existing vacant brownfield site on Bayview Terrace at the bottom of Asylum Road, opposite the Strand Road PSNI station.
The application, lodged by Habinteg Housing Association, will see 14 new apartments constructed, comprising of five two-bedroom apartments and nine one-bedroom apartments.
Approval for the new development was issued at meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee held in March 2016.
The new building has now been constructed, and is expected to be completed in the next number of weeks.
Speaking at the meeting, the SDLP’s John Boyle welcomed the application, saying that it was ‘important to fill in’ this brown field site.
“It looks like a mouth with a missing tooth,” Cllr Boyle said.
Meanwhile, the Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue also welcomed Habinteg’s proposal, adding that it would ‘close up the gap’ between buildings on the street.
The application was approved after it received unanimous support across the chamber.
