Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has criticised British Brexit Minister David Davis after he left the latest round of Brexit negotiations in Brussels.

Mrs Anderson said: “In the lead up to the Brexit vote, the right wing of the Tory party had a cavalier attitude to the disaster that would be Brexit and made claims that are now acknowledged as untrue. To the Tories Ireland, our economy, our agreements and our citizens’ rights did not merit any thought and were collateral damage.

“The people of the North saw through that and voted to remain.

“The same right wing group are now in the leadership of the Tory party and the same cavalier approach continues.

“They have been a series of papers on Brexit from the British government that were high on rhetoric and low on solutions.

“Four days have been set aside this week for negotiations between the British Government and the EU.

“This is to address the need to protect the Good Friday Agreement and to deal with the implications of Brexit on Ireland North and South.

“We have today learned that the British Brexit Minister David Davis has left these talks after a matter of hours to return to London.

“This is not good enough and exposes the rhetoric of the British governments documents as meaningless.

“The Irish Government and the EU negotiators must make it clear that neither David Davis or the British Government can walk away from their obligations under the Good Friday Agreement or their responsibility to resolve the problems with their Brexit policy.”
