A 52 year-old man who stripped to the waist and fell asleep in a Housing Executive office in Derry has been jailed for four months.

Patrick Farren, of Stoneburn Place, appeared before Derry Magistrates Court charged with disorderly behaviour.

The offence was committed on July 11, 2014, two days after Farren was released from prison.

The court heard that Farren went to the Housing Executive office on Glendermott Road when he was drunk and 'stripped to the waist', verbally abusing staff and demanding to buy the family bungalow.

Farren then proceeded to fall asleep on the floor.

When police arrived they attempted to wake Farren and he began to throw his arms around and swear at police.

There were members of the public and staff present as Farren continued to shout obscenities.

Brendan Kearney, defence solicitor, said that Farren had come out of prison and his benefits had not been stopped so there was a 'windfall' of £600 waiting for him.

Mr Kearney said Farren had two metal plates in his head and had 'a rough history all round'.

Deputy District Sean O'Hare said that he could not ignore a suspended sentence that had been given to Farren and noted he had just been released from prison before committing the offence.

Farren was jailed for four months and ordered to pay a £25 offenders' levy.
