Man set on fire in Derry
A man is recovering after being set on fire in Derry in what has been described as a “disgusting vile act.”
The man, a well-known homeless person, was set alight in the city centre.
It is understood he was not badly injured.
Police are examining CCTV footage of the incident which took place in the John Street area yesterday evening.
The incident has been widely condemned.
Hitting out at those responsible, SDLP MLA Mark Durkan paid tribute to those who helped the victim.
He said: “He was in shock and was refusing medical attention. Fortunately, some ‘good samaritans’ and the team at Damian House took control of the situation.
“He was not badly burned, probably because he was wearing two pairs of trousers.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “The police are examining CCTV and I would urge anybody with any information on who carried out this disgusting vile act to come forward.”
Independent Cllr Gary Donnelly also condemned those responsible, adding he was despaired by the incident.
