A man was rescued after falling into the River Foyle in Derry this evening.

The man was seen falling into the water at the cityside end of the Peace Bridge shortly before 8pm.

The alarm was raised and police officers and members of the Foyle Search & Rescue team were quickly on the scene.

It is understood that a member of the public went into the water to help the man to safety.

He was taken to the water's edge and managed with support to climb up a ladder.

The rescued man was taken away in an ambulance but it is understood that he did not sustain any serious injuries as a result of the incident.
