A 19 year-old man appeared in court today in connection with a stolen car that was found burnt out on the Buncrana Road at the weekend.

Kevin Shields, of Northland Road, appeared before Derry Magistrates Court charged with aggravated vehicle taking causing damage, going equipped for burglary or theft with a multi-tool and the theft of cash, a scratch card and a lighter to the value of £38.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place on May 10, 2014.

Shields was also charged with entering a dwelling in Carnhill as a trespasser and stealing loose change contained in a vodka and Jack Daniels bottles and a bottle containing prescription tablets. These alleged offences are said to have taken place on April 28, 2014.

Shields was also charged with a breach of bail. He was required to observe a curfew from 10pm to 8am but was arrested in connection with the car theft and damage at 5.10am on Saturday morning.

A police officer in court said that he could connect Shields to both sets of charges.

Shields was remanded in custody and fined £50 for the breach of bail. He will appear back before the court again via video link from prison on June 2.
