A non-profit organisation in Derry that offers help and advice to those battling drug and alcohol has scooped a major award.
Heal the Hurt took the People’s Choice Award at the Derry Junior Chamber Nutt’s Ball.
Liam Stewart, founder of Heal the Hurt, said he has been overwhelmed by the public support that has seen the organisation lift the People’s Choice Award at the Nutt’s Ball amid over 100 competitors.
Mr Stewart, who was accompanied by Fr Thomas and Fr Christopher of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, who also work with Heal the Hurt, was presented the award by Catriona Donnelly.
Mr Stewart also thanked the Reverend David Latimer of the First Presbyterian Church, describing him as a ‘great man’, who had helped him establish Heal the Hurt.
He also had a special word of thanks to Brother Patrick of the Friars, who recently left for America to receive training in counselling for addiction
“Brother Patrick was one of my best friends, who supported Heal the Hurt from the start and worked long, hard dedicated hours and whose passion was to help those suffering from addiction.”
Mr Stewart said he felt that Heal the Hurt was providing a much-needed service for those affected by addiction in the city.
“I believe Heal the Hurt won this award as drink and drugs are an epidemic claiming two lives every day in Northern Ireland, families are not knowing where to go or what can be done for their loved ones,” he said.
“I, myself, have 25 years’ experience in this field and I’m a full qualified psychotherapist and specialise in prescription drugs and alcohol and recreational drug abuse.
“In less than two years, I’ve put hundreds of people through treatment where they’ve been given the choice to no longer endure life but to live life with their family and loved ones.”
Liam thanked everyone who had contributed towards the organisation’s success.
“Shauna Deery, Tony Doherty and all the staff at Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership have been unbelievable providing us with the premises and extra help from Shauna with all her experience,” he said.
“Thanks to everyone who voted for and supported Heal the Hurt, together we are already making a difference. Regardless of being a non-funded organisation and I’m working unpaid, Heal the Hurt will continue the much-needed work that it’s doing.
“I personally lost three family members. To me, they didn’t die in vain, I am their voice! There is no shame in having an addiction; the shame is in doing nothing about.”
