SDLP Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin has called for the gritting of the Carmoney Road to take place without delay.
Ms. McLaughlin said: “There’s no doubt that rural areas are often especially affected by the consequences of frosty weather and the particular dangers of the Carmoney Road have been well-known for several years.
"Unfortunately, this stretch has been the location of numerous accidents, yet we still have not seen any efforts from the Department to make progress on its gritting.
"As businesses across Derry deal with the current icy weather, commuters and employees will no doubt be highly anxious about traversing this road in the next few weeks and months.
“People deserve to feel safe in their travel to work and I am urging progress on the gritting of this road, particularly as a number of businesses use large machines use this road.
"These businesses pay their Council tax and they have every right to expect that we are doing everything possible to minimise the risk of accidents in the local area.
“I will be raising this directly with the Department for Infrastructure and hope to see progress on this.”
