'Inadequate A6 safety measures putting lives at risk' - Durkan

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has expressed serious safety concerns presented by Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) measures in place as part of ongoing A6 construction works.

He expressed disappointment that despite consistently flagging issues, including lack of lighting along the route, neither caretaker Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd or Permanent Secretary Julie Harrison have taken action.

The Foyle MLA commented: “Driving conditions along the A6 road network, given the ongoing and prolonged construction works, are grim at the best of times. However, with this week’s icy spells and slippery road conditions this route is nothing less than treacherous.

“I’ve repeatedly called for an urgent review of current temporary mitigations yet despite promises to improve signage, they remain problematic.

"I’m contacted on a weekly basis by frustrated and fearful commuters complaining that current measures are not just confusing but a potential death trap.

"Temporary signage currently in situ is hard to spot never mind read and it’s nothing short of a white-knuckle ride when visibility is poor.

"I’m disappointed that my concerns, and the concerns raised by so many of the public, remain unaddressed.

“The delays in the completion of the new road are, without a doubt, frustrating for the Department too but the ongoing inadequacy of safety measures and signage along the current route is completely unacceptable and is I fear, putting lives at risk.”
