A massive illegal dump uncovered on the outskirts of Derry is one of the biggest of its kind ever found in Europe, the Environment Minister has said.
The bill for cleaning up illegal waste at a sprawling site at Mobuoy Road in Campsie has so far reached £800,000.
More than half a million tonnes of material was buried without permission in and around a licensed recycling site.
Experts from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) disposed of high risk refuse and monitored water quality over the last seven months ahead of consideration of a longer term solution.
SDLP Environment Minister Mark H Durkan said the scale of illegal dumping discovered was 'like nothing we've ever seen before on this island or on these islands'.
The BBC's Spotlight programme last night broadcast an investigation into the companies allegedly involved in the illegal dumping.
Mr Durkan said it was vital that steps were taken to ensure that no similar case was allowed to happen again.
