Derry pipe band crowned world champions

Derry’s Colmcille Pipe Band has picked up a first place at the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland. Under Pipe Major Mark Hasson the Galliagh-based band came first in the Grade B Band category. Held over two days for the third consecutive season, over 45,000 people attended the Glasgow event which featured bands from across the world. Congratulations have been led by Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness who described the success as a “magnificent achievement.” Foyle SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey described the win as “wonderful news.” He said: “Well done to all of you for your training and practice sessions, now paying off, excellent ambassadors for this region of Ireland. Mr Ramsey added the success was a “massive tribute” to the band’s founder, the late Barney Hasson.
