derrycourt
A Derry man carried a baton around the city following a a threat from a “criminal organisation,” the local Magistrates Court has been told. Patrick Quigley (29), from Beechwood Avenue, appeared charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. The charge related to the discovery of a black “flick baton” on Shipquay Street on February 7 this year by a member of the public. The court heard Quigley claimed he had been carrying the baton for his “own protection” following a threat from a “criminal organisation.”. Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court Quigley, who admitted the offence, had decided that “rather than use the baton he would throw it away.” He was fined £100 by District Judge Barney McElholm who also made a destruction order for the weapon.
