Derry hotels, restaurants and bars to cater for assigned Clipper crews in 'Adopt a Boat' scheme
20 Jun 2018
The return of The Foyle Maritime Festival to Derry-Londonderry from 14th – 22nd July 2018 will see thousands of well wishers welcome the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race Fleet into Derry quay next month and the crews can look forward to hospitality to match that welcome when they step onto dry land. The Adopt a Boat initiative has paired the eleven competing teams up with local hotels, restaurants and bars who will cater for them during their stopover in the city ensuring they are well fed and watered before the final leg of their epic journey to Liverpool. Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor John Boyle, welcomed the scheme and thanked the local hospitality providers for offering their services during the festival which will see the city’s quayside transformed into a maritime wonderland full of fun, activities, music, arts and crafts. “Excitement is really starting to build for the Foyle Maritime Festival with the Clipper fleet set to leave New York for Derry at the start of next week,” he said. “The Adopt a Boat scheme was one of the real successes of the 2016 Festival and was a great way for crews to connect with the public by having a base on land to enjoy refreshments and socialise. “The average crew is around 20 strong so it is a significant commitment to cater for them for the week. “I would like to thank the local businesses for stepping forward and offering their hospitality which I’m sure will be well received.” Danielle McNally, Business Officer with Derry City and Strabane District Council, said the ‘Adopt a Boat’ scheme was a prime opportunity to showcase the selected local venues to a global audience. “The Adopt a Boat scheme aims to offer the Clipper Race crews the best in local hospitality and ensure they have an amazing experience when they come in July. “The scheme can also raise the profile of the participating businesses and has the potential to drive additional footfall to the venues during the week-long event.” The host venues and Clipper yachts in full are: Grannie Annie's Kitchen and Bar (Hotelplanner.com), Nonnas Wood Fire Pizzas (Great Britain), Everglades Hotel (NASDAQ), Walled City Brewery, (Dare to Be), Bishops Gate Hotel (Unicef), Da Vincis Hotel (Garmin) Sandwich Co (Sanya Serenity Coast), Soda and Starch (Liverpool 2018), Primrose (Qingdao), Nandos (PSP Logistics), The Brickwork (Visit Seattle).
