Man placed on ‘Violent Patients’ list assaulted doctor in Derry hospital
22 Jun 2018
A 49-year-old man who assaulted a doctor in Altnagelvin Hospital earlier this year has been jailed for two months and placed on the National Health Service’s Violent Patients List. Conor Rodgers appeared at Derry Magistrates Court where he was convicted of assaulting a doctor and being disorderly in the hospital on January 23 this year. The court was told that the defendant is currently banned from entering several hospitals in the North and is on the NHS Violent Patients’ List. The court heard that Rodgers had left the doctor ‘feeling intimidated’ and had grabbed at his name badge and lanyard while receiving treatment in Altnagelvin Hospital. The court was told that the incident occurred when Rodgers was sober. Defence barrister Ciaran Roddy told the court that his client, who was said to be in some pain at the time, had objected to being examined in the presence of female nurses. Commenting, District Judge Barney McElholm told the defendant that he should ‘grow up’. He then sentenced Rodgers, of Drumannon Rise in Omagh, to two months in prison.
