Daily Mile success in Derry schools makes keeping fit fun

Cumber Claudy Primary School 2
The Western Trust Health Improvement, Equality and Involvement Department (HIEI) are rolling out ‘The Daily Mile’ initiative in partnership with the Education Authority across the Western Trust Area. The Western Trust have been working with colleagues in the Education Authority to introduce ‘The Daily Mile’ in a number of schools including Cumber Claudy Primary School. This simple initiative was developed by a Head-teacher in a Primary School in Stirling in 2012 who was concerned by the children’s lack of fitness and levels of obesity. She developed the simple but effective concept of all children running, jogging or walking a mile every day during school and went on to prove The Daily Mile to be both sustainable and effective in combatting inactivity and obesity in her school. Mr Nick Tomlinson, Principal of Cumber Claudy Primary School highlighted that the kids have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in such a fantastic initiative which has encouraged them to be physically active in a non-competitive and fully inclusive way. More information on The Daily Mile is available at: For schools joining in with The Daily Mile Initiative in the Western Trust Area; the Health Improvement, Equality & Involvement Team can offer various resources to support this such as large posters for each classroom with sticky labels to document each mile walked/ jogged/ run, large evaluation posters and a certificate for each class. If you wish to start The Daily Mile in your school or for more information and resources; please contact the Health Improvement, Equality and Involvement Department on the details outlined below: Health Improvement, Equality and Involvement Department Maple Villa B Gransha Park Clooney Road Derry/Londonderry BT47 6WJ Tel: (028) 7186 5127 (ext 217127) Email: Pictured above: Children at Cumber Claudy Primary School having fun taking part in The Daily Mile.
