Match of the Day - Clipper teams to face their biggest challenge yet as they take on Foyle Cup coaches at the Brandywell
09 Jul 2018 1:43 PM
Race crews from the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race have laid down the gauntlet to coaches from the Foyle Cup for the free admission game at Brandywell Stadium next Wednesday, July 18th. (Kick off 10am). Foyle Cup Chairman Michael Hutton is looking forward to welcoming the Foyle Maritime Festival crews onto dry land and into the brand new stadium for the game. “I think the players are delighted that it’s on the grass rather than out on the water,” he laughed. “I don’t think they’d fancy it so much if it was a boat race, maybe we can have a rematch at sea the next time. “We were delighted to accept the invitation of the game from Clipper, it’s a nice way to celebrate the fact that two major events are being held in the city in the same week. “It’s seems to be generating some interest from the public which is great and we’ll be playing it in the right spirit – that we must win!” Well-known local coaches Paul McLaughlin from Trojans FC and Oxford’s Kevin Doherty will jointly manage the Foyle Cup side which will contain a number of visiting international coaches. This year’s Foyle Cup from July 16th – 21st is set to be the biggest yet with over 400 teams and 6,500 participants taking part and over 90,000 spectators expected to attend the games. Full fixture details are available on the club’s website www.foylecup.com and supporters can also stay up to date with results and venues through the tournament app. The Foyle Maritime Festival returns to Derry~Londonderry from 14th – 22nd July 2018 and will host the stopover of the Clipper Race 2017-18 as they near the end of their Round the World Journey. Queens Quay will once again be transformed into a maritime wonderland full of fun, activities, music, arts and crafts as we prepare to welcome the Clipper Race yachts back.
