Derry man who fled after being confronted while attempting to break into a car jailed for four months
16 Aug 2018
A 21-year-old Derry man who fled after being confronted while attempting to break into a car has been jailed for four months. Steve Smith, whose address was given as Marianus Park in Derry, appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court sitting in Omagh yesterday where he admitted three charges relating to the incident on July 25 last year. The court heard the injured party saw Smith in the drive trying the handle of the car, which was parked in a driveway. The defendant then hit the glass with his elbow trying to break the glass. The court was told that the householder then confronted Smith, who ran off and dropped a bag as he ran. Inside the bag was a charging block stolen from another car parked nearby. Smith was arrested and taken to Strand Road where a stolen mobile phone was found on him. Defence barrister Sean Doherty said given the serious nature of the charges it was accepted prison was inevitable. The defendant was then sentenced to four months in prison.
