New 'Mission Centre' run by Franciscan Friars to replace community hall in Derry which closed down

A Derry community centre which closed down is now set to be brought back into use after ambitious plans were lodged for its redevelopment. St Joseph’s Parish Centre in the Galliagh area is now to be redeveloped as a ‘Mission Centre’ after an application was lodged with Derry City and Strabane District Council for the redevelopment of the building. The application, which was lodged by the Franciscan Friars, will see the demolition of part of the building to be replaced by a new build. The proposal states that the new development will be used as Friars Mission Centre, ‘providing for running of courses, activities for school groups, youth clubs, together with provision of support for people in need of same’. Speaking to the Derry News yesterday, the SDLP councillor for the area welcomed the progress on the proposal. “It’s good to see these plans progress, as this building has been closed for some time now, and it will be a positive move for the local community to see it brought back into use,” Cllr Tierney said. “The new centre will also benefit the young people living in the Galliagh area, and also help to bring new investment in youth services and schemes for young people.” The plans will be considered by the local council’s Planning Committee in the autumn.
