The voice of the people of the north needs to be heard in the European Parliament says a Derry MEP. Sinn Féín MEP Martina Anderson has called on the Irish government to allocate its two additional European seats to the north. Speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg Martina Anderson said: "The north of Ireland should continue to have representatives in the European Parliament post Brexit. "Independent legal advice demonstrates that its legally permissible and possible for the Irish government to create a new constituency for the north and allocate its two additional seats to it. "Out of 28 member states, 22 afford nationals not resident in their Member State the right to vote in European Parliament elections. "Currently Ireland deprives us living outside the jurisdiction that right to vote. "With less than 200 days before Brexit the people of the north will suffer most and decisions taken in the EU will continue to impact on our lives. "Strong voices from the north of Ireland are needed in this Parliament post Brexit so the Irish government need to act now and ensure that our democratic rights are upheld by allocating the two additional seats to the north."
