A man found with a knife in a local night club told police he had only brought it to return it to his friend who had forgotten it. David Barr, 18, of Francis Street in Derry admitted possessing a knife on July 19. The court was told police were called after reports of a man having been seen with a knife in the night club. Staff approached him and asked for the knife, and Barr handed it over. Barr was arrested and refused to submit to a preliminary breath test. He said a friend had left the knife at his house and he brought it with him to return it, adding that his actions were 'stupid'. Defence barrister Stephen Chapman said Barr had not been brandishing the knife. Barr was sentenced to three months suspended for two years.
