Court hears man who stole bottle of vodka from Derry supermarket was caught after he 'got tired' as a result of being chased by security staff

A 26-year-old man who was being chased by security staff after he stole a bottle of vodka told police he ‘just got tired and stopped’. Derek Creswell, of Crawford Square appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with stealing the bottle of vodka on July 31. The court was told police were called to Tesco after reports of a male stealing a bottle of vodka. Security staff told police the man Creswell had been observed putting the bottle in his jacket and leaving the store. Staff gave chase and recovered the alcohol. CCTV was seized and Creswell identified and arrested. After being taken into police custody, he was searched and a small bag of cannabis was found in his possession. Defence solicitor Michael McGee told the court Creswell had ‘got some stability’ in his life. Creswell was sentenced to three months suspended for 18 months and fined £150.
