Man arrested on suspicion of hate crime after sectarian abuse shouted in front of children in the Fountain area of Derry last night

A 30-year-old man has been arrested after an incident in the Fountain Estate in Derry yesterday evening. The police have confirmed that it responded to a report of a hate crime in the area. On arrival they spoke with a 30-year-old male who was then arrested and charged with a number of offences. The DUP councillor Graham Warke described the incident as 'shocking'. "This man came into the Fountain via Wapping Lane and began shouting sectarian abuse in front of children as young as six," he said. "The people of the Fountain shouldn't have to be subjected to this sort of behaviour and I would like to commend the PSNI for its swift response." The man is expected to appear at Derry Magistrates Court this morning.
