25 Oct 2018
A 23-year-old shoplifter who jumped off Derry's Walls while being chased by by police has been jailed for six months. Adam McDaid, 23 admitted stealing goods valued at more than £600 from Debenhams and Boots on June 30. The court was told McDaid was seen by police walking up Shipquay Street and approached him. McDaid made off and police pursued him. The court heard that during the chase, McDaid jumped off the City Walls. The court was told that while running, he was discarding items which later turned out to be aftershave and the like. Inquiries led police to check CCTV at Debenhams and McDaid could be seen lifting items. Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that this man had 'grown up' with District Judge Barney McElholm and added he was currently serving a sentence. McDaid was sentenced to six months.
